‘The ‘John Piper’ Community Art Projects

A local community art project - led by Donna Maria Taylor

This community art project was started in the Spring term of 2020 when Donna was teaching a regular York Learning ‘experimental watercolour’ class in York EXPLORE library.

At the time it was decided that the group of twelve learners in the class would each produce a section of a John Piper artwork in their own interpretative style.

Unfinished, the artwork remained in a folder for the next 5 years…and it was only in 2025 that Donna decided to finally pull it all together.

By this time the group had been disbanded of course, but some of the learners now attended Donna’s online art class and new people also came forward wanting to get involved.

Therefore, two pieces were produced in the end based on John Piper’s work: “Jazenne Charente” and (Title not Known), John Piper, 1972

The original pieces were executed on watercolour paper and incorporated water-based mediums whilst the newer pieces were made up of other mediums including collage, photography and acrylic.

In total 22 individuals ended up working on the artwork instead of the original 12

The results are currently displayed in Southlands Methodist Church. You can visit on Thursdays between 11am and 2pm or on Saturdays between 10am to 12pm.
